Local designers who attended FashionTT’s workshop on garment production are describing it as a great and highly informative seminar with calls for similar workshops in the future. The recently concluded Fashion UPGRADE! Producing Quality Garments that Meet National and International Standards workshop was held in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) and sought to enhance the competencies of local fashion designers to produce garments that meet international standards. Over 50 experienced and aspiring local fashion designers, seamstresses, tailors and business persons in the fashion community/industry were in attendance.
The Fashion UPGRADE! workshop was facilitated by Ms. Violet Davis-Maurice, Lecturer (part time) in Textiles and Design at the University of the West Indies and Chief Examiner for the Caribbean Examinations Council’s Textiles and Clothing program. Christopher Nathan, a stalwart in the local fashion industry, was also present and provided insight into innovation and entrepreneurship in the local fashion industry and emphasized the importance of production standards and quality management.
The Fashion UPGRADE! workshop covered several key topics including:
- The Use of Standards and Specifications in the Apparel Industry
- Criteria for the Assessment of Quality in Apparel and Sewn Products
- Requirements for the Voluntary Standard for Garment Construction and
- Meeting the Requirements of the National Compulsory Labelling Standard
